How this archive works

GovCommunication subscribes to the public email lists of elected officials and government offices — the same newsletters anyone can sign up for — and publishes what they send, so constituents, journalists and researchers can read, search and compare it.

Collection

Each list gets its own unique address at our domain. That tells us exactly which list an email came from, and shows when an address starts receiving mail from somewhere it never signed up for.

Verification

Email is easy to forge, so every message is checked against its sender’s DKIM signature, a cryptographic seal the sending domain publishes. Emails marked ✓ Signed by … passed that check and weren’t altered in transit. Anything that fails, or comes from a domain a list has never used, is held back for review instead of being published.

Privacy

Data

Officials data comes from unitedstates/congress-legislators (Congress) and Open States (state legislatures). A JSON API is available at /api/messages, with the same filters as the inbox.
